Poll: Just 22 Percent Say Economy Getting Better

CBS News Poll analysis by the CBS News Polling Unit: Sarah Dutton, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus and Anthony Salvanto.

The recession may technically be over, but most Americans aren't feeling the effects: A newly-released CBS News poll finds that just 22 percent of Americans say the economy is getting better.

A greater percentage - 27 percent - say the economy is actually getting worse, while one in two say it's staying the same.

Asked to compare their family's financial situation to two years ago, just 11 percent say things have gotten better. Forty-three percent, meanwhile, say they have gotten worse. Forty-five percent say there has been no change.

With the unemployment rate near 10 percent, four in five Americans say the economy is in bad shape, and only 19 percent describe the economy as good. Nearly two in three are at least somewhat concerned about someone in their household losing their job in the next year, including 35 percent who are very concerned.

The economy remains the overriding concern of most Americans: 54 percent volunteer it as the most important problem facing the country. Other issues were cited by a far smaller percentage of Americans, among them health care (7 percent), the deficit and debt (3 percent) and immigration (3 percent).

This poll was conducted among a random sample of 1,129 adults nationwide, interviewed by telephone October 1-5, 2010. Phone numbers were dialed from RDD samples of both standard land-lines and cell phones. The error due to sampling for results based on the entire sample could be plus or minus three percentage points. The error for subgroups is higher. This poll release conforms to the Standards of Disclosure of the National Council on Public Polls.

Friends and neighbors. Don't reward republicans for feeding on desperation. I have bid two jobs in the past week and the businesses were both backed up with work. They are waiting until after the election before they hire to push republican ideology. They are hoping for republican wins. Don't give into the desperation they have spread. Estimates are now that republicans will spend 200 million dollars on this election. Much of it from foreign governments like China and India. Our Founding Fathers warned about foreign influence and considered it as treason. Voting for the desperation that republicans have spread is like rewarding a rapist. Throw them out office.

Refuse to engage in debate and then leave calling you a Racist.. =================================================================== Sounds EXACTLY like the Tea Party. They are all furious at the implication that race is a factor in their political views ? despite the fact that they blame the financial crisis on poor black homeowners, spend months on end engrossed by reports about how the New Black Panthers want to kill "cracker babies," support politicians who think the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was an overreach of government power, tried to enact South African-style immigration laws in Arizona and obsess over Charlie Rangel, ACORN and Barack Obama's birth certificate.

The question should be where would we be economically if the Republicans had won the last election? Imagine that with full honesty. 20 monthes ago banks, the auto industry, the mortage industry and the construction industry we're in a literal freefall. Layoff by the tens of thousands, dealerships closing in every city, ten million American's being forclosed on loans put together by unregulated bankers, lenders and appraiser's. Imagine where our country would be today? 20% unemployment, soup lines, tents everywhere, riots. Most likely wouldn't you agree? We're stable now. The fall has stopped. The auto industry completely recovered, rehiring and making money. In the last year have you notice the huge windfarms going up a hundred miles outside of every major city? The effects of Bush and Cheney's unregulated Corporate system literally brought our country and the rest of the world to it's knees. Now they want back in office, as Arab Corporate Puppets again. We can't allow this. Look at we're we were a tick and a half ago? We should all be standing and applauding our President,Vice President and the Majority Party. Stopping the crash has taken place. The recovery is just starting, and by 2012 will be complete. To be perfectly honest, I was afraid two years ago when the 1920 signs we're flashing loud and clear. You saw them too. It's far from the country we used to be before Bush and Cheney but we're stable again. The fall has stopped. Back the majority party, the recovery has just started. Don't be afraid. The truth is we're stable now and in two and a half more years we will be a nation completely recovered with a 3 or 4 percent unemployment rate and a booming constrution market that's rebuilding America into the new DigiNet age. We're American's. Don't let Republican politicians scare you into anything else. We Democrat's are saving America as we talk. Stay with us and in two and a half years we'll all be cheering and aplauding our President and the Majority party.

WORD! The other side to the headline should be the 50% that say it's staying the same....had the GOP kept their hands on the steering wheel, there would be 90+5 who would, at this time, be saying that "WE ARE STILL IN A DEPRESSION!"

WOW The Liberals are now turning on themselves. rharrin1 said this was a Republican poll. Evidently rharrin1 is a product of our public education system which is populated by union thugs who produce more people believing in the entitlement system. All rharrin1 would have to do is READ the article and it says it was done by CBS. I dont remember CBS every leaving the rest of the Liberal Media Circus. What actually is happening is what happens to every Liberal. You can not argue facts with them, all they do is bounce from one baseless charge to the next. Refuse to engage in debate and then leave calling you a Racist..

22% of people must live in a fantasy world not to see what is going on. Obama stated today the republicans will have to learn how to work with HIM if they win the house. That kind of arrogance is only going to make America despise him even more than it does now. For a guy who is suppose to be so smart, he can't figure out a Republican win means the people are TELLING HIM TO WORK WITH republicans. This arrogant elitist is totally disconnected from the people. We'll see if he finally hears his answer on Nov 2.........

Obama is much more connected to the American people than any Repub could possibly be,, unless of course you are talking about the wealthiest individuals. The Repubs talk very well with them. Obama has accomplished a great deal and quite a bit considering what he was handed. Let's see...a economy destroyed by Republicans, an unjust war that is costing us trillions of dollars, international relations that were destroyed by Bush, Wall Street, the automobile industry and trillions of dollars in debt because of BUSH and the Repubs. Thanks to Obama we have put people back to work, yes slowly, but steadily, our international place in the world is returning and on and on and on. Give Obama some credit.

saturn05, that's the problem, Obama has been given too much "credit". The only problem is he is using our (the US tax payers) credit card.
